About Eric Claassen

Eric (1957) is 20% academic and 80% sequential entrepreneur. He was also the winner of the Dutch 1 million Euro NGI Valorisation Award for ‘Excellent deal making with Industry”. He is on the Supervisory Board of Viroclinics Biosciences BV (PresCom), CR2O BV and Bright Move BV (TU Eindhoven). He is founder and CEO/Statutory director of ViroNovative BV, Darmgezondheid BV and ML Consultancy BV. He is Chairman of the PAB of Pfizer Consumer Health (USA) and Chairman of the SAB of Christian Hansen A/S (Denmark). In 2001 he was appointed as the first Biopartner professor "Entrepreneurship in the Life Sciences" on behalf of the Ministry of Economic Affairs at the Athena Institute, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. This chair, which he still holds, was transformed in 2005 to “Business management and Entrepreneurship in Health & Life Sciences with a Tenure Full Professorship (0.4 FTE). In 2016 eight PhD students are working under his direct guidance at the cross roads of Medical/Life Sciences and Business development and IP management.

He was elected chairman (level 1 CTS clearance) of NATO PG32 on Handheld detection of Biological Weapons. He has been member of non-executive boards of several Biotech Start-ups including 10 year as PresCom of AM-Pharma BV. Among various memberships of committees he is an elected member of the Netherlands Academy of Technology and Innovation ( and (from 1992-2013) the Dutch Health Council(Gezondheidsraad).

For 21 years he was full professor (0 FTE) in “Knowledge Valorisation in the Life Sciences” at Dept. Virology Erasmus MC in Rotterdam where he was professor of Immunology since 1994. In 2005 he was appointed as “Entrepreneur in Residence” at the RSM (Rotterdam School of Management; bedrijfskunde). He was also a visiting professor for the Immunology courses at Institut Pasteur/University of Paris from 1992 to 2010.

After graduating cum laude in Medical Biology, Eric attained his PhD in Medicine some 30 months later in 1987 and spent 9 years at TNO Prevention an Health (vaccines and autoimmunity) after which period he became R&D director and deputy CEO at the Dutch Institute for Animal Science and Health (700 employees; 1996-2001) where he transformed the civil servant institute in a company with 5 successful spin-outs. Since 2001, he is self employed and combines many investments and functions all related to his main focus on research management, valorization and business development in life sciences with a special emphasis on immunology (SMBWO board certified), microbiology, virology, probiotics & vaccines. Eric is senior author on over 225 peer reviewed (and highly quoted; see PubMed under E Claassen, and H-index of 38 per 2015) papers, patents and directed over 25 PhD’s.

Eric remarried (Conny Kruyssen) after losing his wife Dr. Suzan Jeurissen to breast cancer (Feb 2003) and is a father of five+1 children. He is an avid sailor, marksman and photographer, is fluent in English and Dutch, and he has adequate reading and conversational skills in Spanish, Catalan, French and German.
